Introducing...the All Time heir apparent.
Plus, find out what your favorite east siders are up to this weekend.
Happy long weekend, everyone. I’m writing this from an undisclosed lake location far from the east side (IYKYK).
A few of you disagreed with my assessment of Tondo on Wednesday, but I stand behind it. I think the food is good (not great), and the space under the train tracks is one-of-one. Some restaurants you choose for the food, and others you choose for the vibe. Tondo is the latter, and that’s okay!
Thanks again to everyone who’s sent me tips recently — if you have interesting intel or an event you think I should plug, DM me.
Here’s what your hot neighbors are doing this weekend:
In honor of the impending long weekend, I asked an assortment of east siders to share their LDW plans in one or two sentences. Here are a few of their answers:
ISABELLA: I’m doing a location scout with some friends for a short film I’m putting together!
HAYDEN: I will be in Salt Lake City for truly some reason.
AARON: The weekend starts on Thursday — we’re going to Mohawk Wellness Collective’s sunset drinks. Saturday we have a house party, followed by a BBQ on Monday. Party hard!
MADELINE: Heading up to Malibu for Malibu Fish & Seafood Co. Haven’t made it out there this summer yet and I can’t stop thinking about the fish + chips! If the parking gods allow me, I’ll be catching the sunset at Point Dume.
BRIAN: Trying to figure out how to get my 11-day-old baby to sleep more lol.
NICO: Drinking wine in the sun with friends, dipping in someone’s pool, cooking, and maybe sneaking in a quick workout to hedge against any hangxiety.
PAIGE: I’m in New York for the long weekend, theatre-ing and US Open-ing.
TORI: Bub & Grandma’s for lunch, then soaking up the sun at the Glassell pool with a magazine in hand.
TIM: I’ll be in Joshua Tree with 14 other queers who are all beautiful, talented, sweet, and mostly single. We’ll be cooking, lounging, learning pop choreography, skinny dipping, and giggling til sunrise with stars in our eyes.
SHIV: Bringing the POC quota to n=2 in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware with my friend lol.
CHELSEA: Long weekends are for things I can’t seem to fit in a normal weekend, like waiting in line at Courage, or making a friend with a pool. (Anyone?)
ADAM: Renegade Y2K dance party on the LA River banks in Frogtown on Saturday.
WALLIS: After battling the August heatwave at home all month, I’m taking a trip back to the east coast to St. Petersburg, FL. The temps will be hot, as will the ocean water, but the mango carts will be ice cold. Here’s to one last weekend of summer!
🍽️ And now for some table scraps…
Just a few months after leaving All Time, Tyler Wells has opened a new live-fire restaurant in Altadena. The intimate 39-seat dining room at Betsy features cozy wood paneling, marble accents, and a huge wood-burning hearth. If you’ve been to All Time, the food here is of a similar ilk — but almost every dish at Betsy is prepared over the fire. It’s dinner hours only at the moment, but Wells plans to expand to all-day once he gets his footing. I’ll be going as soon as I can; expect a full review in the coming weeks.
Palm trees may be a symbol of LA, but they’re on their way out. It’s not happening overnight. But according to Pat Morrison, they suck up way too much water, provide next to no shade, and pose a massive fire risk in residential neighborhoods.
From the tip line — the Arroyo Seco Neighborhood Council is hosting a community rock climbing event tomorrow, 8/30 from 11am-1pm. It’s at Ramona Hall, it’s free, and it’s open to all ages and abilities. I love a neighborhood council, and I’d honestly go to this if I was in town.
I keep thinking about how Echo Park’s becoming a one-stop shop for gift buying. When I need to grab someone a bottle of wine, I pop into Dada Market. A book? Stories (or Reverie Bookstand or A Good Used Book). When I need a strange little conversation piece, it’s Woodcat Provisions. And with the recent opening of Felix & Pierre’s, there’s now a spot dedicated solely to stationery. I’m not the most talented giver, but sometimes I think we should normalize getting your friends little gifts at random.
LAist did a fun interview with the Hacks team, in which they briefly discuss filming at the Americana. I’d really love to talk to the Hacks team solely about filming at the Americana. I have so many questions, and it’d be a phenomenal issue. My DMs are open….
The organizing committee for the 2028 Olympics is moving the diving events from Exposition Park to the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center in Pasadena. According to LA28 representatives, the move will result in a total savings of $18mm. But the Rose Bowl facilities will still require $2-3mm in improvements to bring them up to Olympic standards.
Here’s a fun video tour of Silver Lake, the “neighborhood that people love to hate.”
Ariana Grande will play two nights at Crypto.com Arena next summer. Her first tour in seven years! I can already envision the scene at Akbar after these shows…
Are Onitsuka Tigers over? Or is their reign only just beginning? I might snag a pair — like the Samba, to some extent, I’m betting they’re timeless.
Fall is coming, and I really like these Margaret Howell sweaters. They’re pricey, and unfortunately I won’t be buying. But if you do, let me know.
For anyone trying to ditch their roommates, this Echo Park one-bedroom might be a good option. It’s fairly reasonably priced and it’s walkable to Sunset. Plus it has real wood floors(!), good light, and a cute patio.
The cover photo for this apartment is the washer/dryer, which is making me laugh. Look, I understand the value of in-unit laundry, believe me. But this apartment is so cute. Someone’s going to get really lucky with this one just because no one else is clicking on it. Also, I firmly believe Angelino Heights is one of the most underrated (and undervalued) neighborhoods in LA.
Have a great long weekend, everyone. I’ll see you Wednesday <3
Just made a res for Betsy!! Can’t wait. Also super curious what happened with All Time. Loved that place.
